Here Comes a Break Out

Not sure if I've already complained to you about my acne scarring. No doubt I have. But I think it's completely fair, I never pick at my pimples yet every time I get one, it gradually goes away leaving a souvenir of our time together. This souvenir usually comes in the form of a reddish brown spot. Not raised off the skin, simply discolouration.

My naive self went to the Body Shop to try to get something to help them disappear. I purchased the Tea Tree Night Lotion.

"Lightweight lotion helps improve the appearance of marks caused by past blemishes."
I WANTED to like this product. First of all I love the minty, tea tree scent! The texture is smooth and feels cool on the skin. Don't even get me started on the packaging...the pump dispenses the perfect amount of product. The cap even gives a satisfying 'click' sound when you close it. Everything was going so well, until it broke me out.

I tried using it in different ways, at different times of year etc etc. Nothing worked, instead of improving my skin, it agitated it. I've never used a skin care product that irritated my skin more than this. It almost makes sense, when I looked at the list of ingredients they were all impossible to pronounce chemicals. I think this is where consumers need to be careful with companies that boast being 'au naturel', sometimes it's all talk. Ultimately I can't really pinpoint what exactly made me react so badly to this lotion, but I know to never use it again.

I suppose I've been sufficiently over-dramatic and complained plenty during this post. If you're still with me after reading this ramble give yourself a pat on the back.
Have you tried this lotion or have any opinions on the tea tree range? I'd love to hear other opinions :)

  2. Let me just say that I know exactly what your going through, I get the same annoying pigmentation marks myself and I have no idea why. I even wear SPF 50+ everyday!
I had a look at the Body Shop one as well when looking for "blemish healers" and remember I was really put off when reading the ingredients list, looks like I made a wise choice in opting for something else! Thanks for the review though, now I definitely won't be tempted to go there! :) x

  3. I used to be such a fan of the tea tree range from the body shop but i found that they were a little bit too harsh for my skin leaving it a bit irritated sometimes. I think the Vitamin E range is really good and gentle which you should go ahead and try :) Thanks for sharing~x

    1. I always thought Vitamin E range more focused on "mature" skin although it's probably worth a try!

  4. I've used the Tea Tree oil line too, and had no success. Honestly i've tried EVERYTHING, and I love proactive and bioterm! it's the only thing that works for me :(

  5. I used quite a lot of this range when I was in my teens and it helped with my skin back then, but I bought a couple of bits maybe a year or so ago, and my skin HATED it! I think a lot of Body Shop products contain large amounts of preservatives, which may be causing the irritation? x

  7. I tend to steer clear on Body Shop products now. I personally prefer Lush -- if you pop in and speak to one of the lovely girls they will help you find something which is suitable for your skin & won't break the bank! :) x

    1. Thanks for the tip. I still like the Body Shop in general but was just a bit miffed at this product :P I've heard really good stuff about Lush face masks recently so I'm looking into one of those! :)

  8. body shop products do tend to be quite harsh :/ but I must say long chemical names don't always mean the ingredient is bad :) check out http://www.beautypedia.com/, lots of product reviews that tell you if the ingredients will cause irritation or not :) I suffer with acne too, I feel your pain :(

    1. Thanks for linking that website! I'm sure you are right, and I am certainly no chemist, but personally I like when I can at least understand what is going onto my skin-gives me peace of mind I guess! ^.^

  9. Such a shame! I have large pores along my cheeks and nose, so I understand your pain as I feel like they get clogged so easily and gross, and I'm still not able to find a great product to help! I hope you find a good one soon!

  11. I love the body shop products, although I do tend to keep away from their skincare( apart from their vitamin E mist which I love )
Have you tried the murad line of skincare? I use their 'time release acne cleanser' every other day when my skin breaks out and the acne is almost gone within days, it is a little drying though on the skin but its nothing a good moisturiser can't fix :)

  13. Have to agree, been using this product for a while and doesn't seem to make any difference! Boo. I think applying diluted tea tree oil is a better way of doing things!
